Defending Fish Welfare
A New and
Proven Method
to Fight Sea Lice
Patented trap technology that attracts, captures, and eliminates sea lice before they reach your salmon. Chemical-free. Made in Norway.
The Sea Lice Challenge
Sea lice are the single greatest biological challenge in salmon aquaculture. They cause skin lesions, stress, reduced growth, higher disease susceptibility, and mortality in farmed Atlantic salmon.
Current treatments — chemical baths, mechanical removal, and cleaner fish — are expensive, stressful for the fish, and increasingly face resistance issues. The industry needs a fundamentally different approach.
LiceDefence offers exactly that: a preventive system that stops sea lice before they reach the salmon, eliminating the need for reactive treatments entirely.

How It Works
Attract. Trap. Eliminate.

Attract
Targeted wavelengths of light (470nm and 550nm) combined with electromagnetic fields attract free-swimming sea lice copepodids before they can enter the pen.
Trap
A dense grid of traps builds an effective defensive wall around the pen, intercepting lice before they reach the salmon.
Eliminate
A small amount of chlorine is generated from seawater directly inside the trap through electrolysis, effectively eliminating trapped sea lice.
Self Cleaning
The trace chlorine produced within the trap serves a dual role: it effectively kills trapped sea lice while inhibiting fouling, ensuring the system requires far less frequent cleaning.
Water Quality
The trace chlorine has no measurable impact on seawater quality. Upon release, whether gradual or sudden, it rapidly dilutes to harmless levels in the open water.

Strong Test Results
from Gildeskål
Excellent outcomes emerged from trials conducted in nine small pens at the Gifas research station in Gildeskål, spanning roughly three months beginning in February 2025.
Test 1: Six pens on and off
Six pens equipped with the LiceDefence system. Each test period lasted two weeks, with activation switched between groups for balanced comparison.
Test 2: Compared to control group
LiceDefence active only 50% of the period. Three control pens with no system compared to six equipped pens over three months.
Detailed Breakdown
Reduction in salmon lice
Fewer adult female lice
Fewer mobile lice
Verified by Veterinærinstituttet, June 2025
The LiceDefence system acts preventively by eliminating sea lice before they attach to the salmon, removing the need for reactive treatments entirely. With the system active only 50% of the test period, results still showed significant lice reduction across all life stages.
Ongoing commercial tests with a newer LiceDefence version in 2026
Average stationary lice per salmon started at 0.75 at the trial's outset. In a scenario with no initial lice infection, the LiceDefence system could be expected to deliver even stronger preventive results.
About LiceDefence
LiceDefence is developed by Brage Innovation, based in Bergen, Norway. Our mission is to protect fish welfare through innovative, sustainable technology.
We believe the future of aquaculture lies in prevention, not treatment. By stopping sea lice before they reach the salmon, we reduce stress, improve welfare, and support a more sustainable industry.
